Design and Sustainability: The Blue Economy

Sustainability is about what and how we use everything in our daily lives. Our choices today could have negative impacts on current and future generations’ ability to live prosperously on this planet. As global citizens, we are concerned about global warming, climate change, and rising sea levels. Living in a beach community, we care about keeping our ocean water quality safe. It’s our responsibility to ensure our future social needs are being met from a positive environmental and economic standpoint. It’s very much a design challenge.

Meet two leaders who understand the importance of our planet, even though their paths and careers are very different:

Matthew Alford is a professor and seagoing physical oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. www.scripps.ucsd.edu

Andy Cohen
is an Architect and Co-CEO of the world’s largest international design, architecture and planning firm Gensler. Gensler designed the new gorgeous Mira Costa Athletic Complex.  www.Gensler.com

During our workshop you will hear from both Matthew and Andy and learn that design and sustainability are connected through the ocean. You will also see how the The Blue Economy will direct us towards a more sustainable future.
